THE GLASS HOUSE

-

WHANGAREI HEADS

Kauri Mountain Point, Taiharuru

It’s arguably one of the country’s most sensational properties so it was no surprise that John Fulton, who has worked in the finance sector both here in New Zealand and all around the world, was completely smitten in 2015 when he first saw what was to become his New Zealand home, a 10.15ha clifftop estate overlooking the Pacific Ocean at Whanga¯ rei Heads.

“It wasn’t even a sunny day; in fact there was a major tropical cyclone happening, but even in the wind and rain, the rugged landscape and the views towards Great Barrier, Little Barrier and the Bay of Islands were so magnificent, I decided then and there to buy it” he says.

During their years in residence, John and his family have made some fairly major changes to the property which features two structures: The cedar-lined Glasshouse, with one-bedroom, generous living spaces, sensational views, and a bathroom in a separate pavilion with glass walls.

It is known as the “lovers’ cottage” and was designed by Paul Clarke of Studio2 Architects. It’s a popular destination for couples looking for an extra-special place to stay and is completely private and secluded.

Te Whara, designed by Andrew Patterson, has three bedrooms and is now able to accommodate up to seven people since Fulton had it extended.

Architect Felicity Christian opened up the adjoining tractor shed to create more living space, enhancing the house’s semi-industrial vibe. It is beautifully appointed with quality furnishings.

“Whenever I’m there, I just switch off completely,” says Fulton.

Although The Glasshouse and Te Whara are incredibly chic and comfortable and it would be easy just to lounge about all day, adventure-loving guests will find no shortage of activities to undertake locally, including fishing, diving, snorkelling and bush walks.

Fulton is proud of the clifftop rock pools, permanently refilled with clean seawater, via a clever pumping system that he devised with his father.

Guests at The Glasshouse and Te Whara can also enjoy gourmet food, cooked and delivered by a local chef.

Fulton and his family have taken the very difficult decision to sell their dream home, as Covid-19 has made international travel a bit complicated, and the children are studying overseas.

“Looking ahead though, after the pandemic, New Zealand is going to be a top tourist destination and more and more people who’ve admired and envied us our fairly normal lives during this strange time will be excited to come and see the country, in person,” he says.

Fulton believes that whoever buys the property, whether they are Kiwis or international owners, will have an absolute jewel in the palm of their hands and can look forward to offering unrivalled hospitality when the borders eventually open — or alternatively they could simply live a life of luxury there themselves.

Bayleys’ John Greenwood actually sold the property to John Fulton five years ago, and this time around he’s marketing it for him, which he says is a dream circular referral.

“We’ve had over 100 inquiries since Christmas, from both here and overseas, and a couple of parties are seriously interested so if anybody reading this likes the idea of owning this wonderful piece of paradise they should get in now, before it’s too late!”
