REMUERA

20A Orakei Road

Ahundred and thirty metres off the road at the south end of the Waiata Reserve in Remuera, the peace, quiet and privacy are enviable, and the owners of 20A Orakei Road know how rare it is.

They have loved this property for 18 years – an occupancy which has been

typical of Parkside Manor, the previous owners having lived there for 15 years.

And no wonder – the elegant, colonial-style house is settled partway down a private lane and offers lovely views across the reserve to the sea.

The three-level, fivebedroom house was built in the ‘60s and is characterised by its weatherboard cladding, timber joinery and colonial-style multipaned windows.

The elegant exterior is

matched by a superb refurbishment inside, undertaken by the owners after three years of careful thought and planning.

The project took 18 months and they say they wouldn’t want to tackle such a job again.

The result, though, is a beautiful blend of old and new, with well-considered attention to detail.

The 504sqm house accommodates five bedrooms, four bathrooms and a variety of

living and entertaining areas.

The main living area comprises an entry which gives access to a formal open plan living and dining area on one side and casual living and dining on the other.

These are separated by an entertainer's kitchen with a spacious island, a pantry and stainless steel Gaggenau appliances.

Polished timber floors add warmth and character and provide a contrast to the offwhite

and dove grey colour palette. Both living spaces have fireplaces, and the formal area is carpeted.

These wings open out to north-facing outdoor entertaining areas, both covered and uncovered, that overlook the gardens which combine formal clipped hedges, mature trees and sub-tropical plantings.

The palms close to the pool area lend a resort-feel to the outdoor space.

There’s an adjoining seven

sided conservatory for morning coffee and after-work drinks, plus a spacious study, a laundry with Miele appliances, and a guest powder room.

On the lower level are two double bedrooms, one with an ensuite and walk-in wardrobe, a family bathroom, another living space and a kitchenette.

All have access out to the paved patio, tiled pool and spa.

On the top floor the master suite has private balcony enjoying views over the park.

An open hallway with builtin study and reading nook links two further double bedrooms and a family bathroom.

With multiple living areas, a landscaped garden and a pool and spa complex, choosing a favourite spot is food for thought.

But the owners do love the shapely conservatory at the end of the deck, saying they have enjoyed many lovely evenings there in what they consider their own little haven.
