1.45 Mob tears through scaffoldin­g in front of northwest steps and nears building.

2pm More rioters break through barriers on east side.

2.11 Rioters shatter windows and break into building.

2.13 Secret Service evacuates Vice-President Mike Pence from Senate floor. Immediate recess of Senate is called. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi evacuated from Capitol complex.

2.14 Mob chases police officer to top of stairs near Senate chamber. Officer lures armed rioters away.

2.24 Rioters open east side door of rotunda. More people flood in, overwhelmi­ng officers. House abruptly recessed. Members told to get under chairs and use tear gas masks if necessary. Crowd outside building grows larger and more violent, beating police.

2.41 Group of rioters tries to smash through locked doors in hall outside House chamber. Woman shot dead as she tries to climb through shattered window.

3pm Rioters break into Senate chamber.

3.13 Trump tweets ‘I am asking for everyone at the US Capitol to remain peaceful’.

4.05 Joe Biden calls on Trump to ‘demand an end to this siege’.

4.17 Trump uploads video to Twitter calling on supporters to go home. Maryland and Virginia send in National Guard and state troopers.

6pm Riot police finally clear Capitol grounds, almost four hours after mob first entered building.

6.01 Trump tweets again, referring to those at Capitol as ‘great patriots’.

11.41pm Joint session of Congress reconvenes.

Jan 7: 3.40am Congress certifies

Biden’s victory.
