Prodrive reveals $900k Impreza
Reimagining of iconic Impreza WRX 22B boasts 300kW and carbon fibre body
The Goodwood Festival of Speed was the setting for the reveal of Prodrive’s rebooted Subaru Impreza 22B, the P25. Prodrive created and ran Subaru’s World Rally Championship cars in its competition heyday and helped developed the iconic 22B road car: only 24 were made in 1998 and it is now one of the most sought-after WRX models.
The P25 looks like the classic 22B, but it’s a full high-tech “reimagining”. Each of the 25 examples are based on original Impreza twodoor underpinnings, but with extensive use of carbon composite body panels that keeps weight under 1200kg.
It’s powered by Subaru’s latest 2.5-litre turbo-boxer engine, but with heavily reworked internals, Garrett motorsport turbocharger and Akrapovic exhaust. It makes 298kW/
600Nm, drives through a six-speed sequential gearbox and with launch control, can hit 100km/h in
3.5 secs.
The track is wider than the
22B at 1770mm; the Bilstein dampers are adjustable for compression and rebound. Brakes are by AP Racing, with multiple pad options depending on the application. The dashboard features a full-width high-definition multi-page display, including a data logger. There is also a WRC-style “fly off” hydraulic handbrake, which automatically disengages the centre differential to remove drive to the rear wheels. However, Prodrive says it has also tried to recreate the ambience of the original 22B in look and materials. Lightweight race seats are optional, which come with carbon door cards. Buyers can also opt to have the rear seats removed, replaced by a partial roll cage.
It’s a comprehensive reboot of an iconic car and is sure to be highly collectible, but it comes at a high price: $891,985.
