Council catching up on recycling

- STAFF REPORTERS

Thousands of west and north Auckland homes have missed out on their new recycle bins.

More than 200,000 households in the north and west of Auckland have been moved to a 240-litre recycle bin system bringing them in line with the rest of the region. But Auckland Council has had 4,092 customers across north and west Auckland notify that their new bins have not yet been delivered. Of these, approximately 1,300 were still to be delivered by the end of last week, Auckland Council waste planning manager Parul Sood says.

The majority of calls council is receiving for non-delivery is for properties that were classified as vacant land, such as newly built properties that did not exist when the rateable information was provided to contractors in November 2015.

‘‘In hindsight, this data should have been refreshed closer to the service being rolled out, and we will take this learning on board for future roll outs,’’ Sood says.

Providing data to contractors early gives them sufficient time to work out scheduling and then allow time for bin manufacturing and all the bin labels and other collateral to be printed. Sood is asking residents who have not yet received a bin, and haven’t already notified the council, to call 09 301 0101 so a bin can be delivered as soon as possible.
