Sports in the west is in good heart.

Since I’ve been manning the editor’s desk at the Western Leader we’ve had a run of winners like Suburbs New Lynn’s victory in the Gallaher Shield.

Waitakere City Football Club claimed the division one title in the Northern Region Football League and this weekend are into another Chatham Cup semi-final. Waitakere have won the Chatham Cup three times - let’s hope they can make it through to the big event, and win. Te Atatu Rugby League Football Club’s women are also have a sterling season with their final set to play next weekend.

Sports clubs play a huge role in our communities. At their best they bring people together in the pursuit of fitness, friendships and for the joy of winning.

There’s not much better than hitting the winning shot or nailing the winning basket. I’m already looking forward to summer so I can stop being rained off the tennis court.
