Police do not want your iTunes cards, it’s a scam

- STAFF REPORTERS

No, you can’t pay your fines with iTunes vouchers, or any other voucher for that matter.

Police have issued a warning over calls purporting to come from government agencies demanding payments for fines, in the form of iTunes or other vouchers.

‘‘Unfortunately, these calls are now being made to look like they are coming from New Zealand numbers’’, detective senior sergeant Iain Chapman said.

‘‘This includes those associated with Government departments such as police.’’

‘‘While these numbers may show a New Zealand number, they are in fact coming from overseas.

We are seeing a huge numbers of these calls coming through, with over 900,000 calls showing as coming from one New Zealand number over the months of June and July this year.

‘‘It’s really important to remember that Government agencies will never require or ask you to pay a fine by using an iTunes voucher’’, he says.

Police are warning that if you do get a call from someone saying you need to pay a fine by iTunes vouchers, or any other kind of voucher, the best thing to do is ’’just hang up’’.
