Polar bear cub stolen from Auckland’s CBD

- CATRIN OWEN

There’s a polar bear cub on the loose in Auckland.

One of the cubs from the Winter Wonderland display in Aotea Square has gone and its mother is said to be incredibly distressed.

‘‘Our polar bear family - Mrs Bear and her wee cubs - came to stay in Aotea Square, as they do every winter all the way from Greenland,’’ Auckland Live’s Georgina Cervin said.

Nanuuk, the littlest bear, went missing on Friday night.

‘‘Nanuuk is the youngest in the family and quite adventurous, so we’re holding out hope that he may have just gone off exploring and forgotten the time,’’ Cervin said.

This missing cub is not the first to go missing. A polar bear lantern went missing from a display at the Auckland Lantern Festival in February.

This missing polar bear is made out of plywood and painted white. Auckland Live is trying to access CCTV footage from Friday night.

‘‘At this stage we’re just appealing for his safe return, no questions asked,’’ Cervin said. Any sightings can be reported to Auckland Live’s Facebook page.
