GLENDENE STABBING

-

A 23-year-old Aucklander appeared at the Waitakere District Court on October 17. The man is charged with the murder of Ronald Clayton Karipa, 42, stabbed to death in Glendene. She opposed media applications to photograph the man, and asked for his identity and the summary of facts to be suppressed until a further hearing, to be held at the High Court at Auckland. Karipa’s family and friends heckled the murder accused and had to be settled by security. Before he was led away, the man yelled back at members of the public who were swearing at him. He was remanded in custody without plea and will reappear at the High Court in November.

TE ATATU STABBING

A 36-year-old woman accused of murder was tearful and shielded her face from media when she appeared at the Waitakere District Court on October 17. She is accused of the murder of Carly Stewart, allegedly stabbed to death in Te Atatu on October 15. The woman’s lawyer says video ‘‘contradicted’’ what media had been told about the alleged offending. Witnesses said Stewart was at the School Rd address for a pamper day. Other neighbours said they witnessed a fight shortly before the alleged stabbing. The murder-accused was remanded in custody and will reappear at the High Court at Auckland in November. She was led away following calls of ‘‘love you sis’’ from supporters in the public gallery. Stewart’s brother, who wanted to be known only as Reuben, said his sister was the mother of two boys, aged eight and 11.

PERMIT RENEWAL

It’s time for people to renew their permits to drive on Muriwai and Karioitahi beaches. Permits are free and can be applied for online through the Auckland Council website. Beach users need to apply for a new permit each year for each vehicle they want to use. There will be increased monitoring of vehicles on these beaches over the summer. Under the Land Transport Act, beaches are legal roads, so road rules apply including speed limits, licensing and registration.
