A classical night out west

-

The classical concert will take place in Avondale on July 28.

Fancy a bit of live classical music out west on a Friday night?

The West City Concert Band (WCCB) and West City Youth Concert Band (WCYCB) will be playing at Avondale College on July 28.

The bands are hosting the West City Pre-Festival Concert prior to their performance at the New Zealand Concert Band Association Festival in Whangarei on August 5 and August 6.

The bands’ musical director Chad Davenport said they would be playing four competition pieces which were classical based.

They were by new and upcoming composers that were quite well respected at the moment, he said.

Davenport said the pieces included The Ring Master’s March by John Mackey and City Trees by Michael Markowski.

People could come and root on their ‘‘west Auckland team’’, he said. ‘‘It’s our trial run.’’

It would be more or less a formal concert and he was expecting about 200 people on the night.

People should come along to be entertained and experience great live music, he said.

The musical director said the show would also include smaller ensembles including the West City Saxophone Quartet.

He said there were about 50 people in the WCCB and 35 in the WCYCB.

The band was made up of woodwind, brass and percussion instruments.
