Toy box pulled off shop shelves

- DANIELLE CLENT

A wooden toy box has been pulled from The Warehouse shelves after parents raised safety concerns.

Six parents said the 4.5 kilogram lid had fallen on their child’s head, with one kid getting stuck.

They were among more than 30 parents who complained online about faulty hinges on the Kids Caboodle Glacier toy boxes.

Melinda Doyle purchased two of the toy boxes from The Warehouse in April, but initially only assembled one.

Doyle discovered the safety fault when she called The Warehouse on September 27 to report paint damage on her second box, she said.

After a number of phone calls with the retail company, she was informed the item had been recalled and was no longer for sale, she said.

A Warehouse spokesperson confirmed it was investigating the toy box due to faulty parts and the product was being recalled.

Doyle, a Taupaki resident, said her two-year-old son came to her crying a few days ago, holding his head and pointing at the toy box.

She said the lid had probably fallen on his head.

‘‘I put two and two together because the hinges on mine are definitely faulty. I’ve been noticing when we lift it that it just falls straight down.’’

Doyle said she was surprised to be told that The Warehouse had not informed people who had already purchased the product that is was no longer safe. ‘‘I bought it online so you could track that.’’

Doyle took to social media on September 27 to warn other parents of the faulty toy box.

‘‘It’s a really heavy lid. I’m concerned if it fell on a kid’s head that it could cause some serious injuries.’’

She said more than 35 people had commented the hinges on their own Kids Caboodle Glacier Toy Box was also faulty.

Of them, six people had said the lid had fallen on their child’s head.

A spokesperson from The Warehouse said it investigated the toy box after safety concerns were raised.

The investigation found that some batches of the toy box had been found to have faulty parts.

‘‘Therefore we’ve made the decision to voluntarily recall the product,’’ they said.

‘‘We’re very sorry for the inconvenience caused and any customers who have concerns about the product can contact their local store.’’
