Food hygiene grades revealed
West Auckland has the second most E-rated food outlets in Auckland.
Auckland Council’s latest hygiene-grading list of the dirtiest places to eat included three in West Auckland.
South Auckland had the highest in the region, with five E-grade food outlets.
All three E-rated food premises in West Auckland were in Henderson.
Kiwi Bagels on Brick Street received its E-grade on October 3 while Nando’s Westcity was graded on October 10.
Nandos Westcity had a cockroach infestation in a bench top which saw it downgraded from its previous A-grade.
Auckland Council’s Etienne Dyssel said pest control was one of the most important factors for an inspection.
‘‘The main factors for downgrading a food business would be cleanliness, food hygiene practices and pest control,’’ Dyssel said.
Kona Lunch Bar on Corban Avenue was also an E-grade.
E-grade was the lowest grading a food business could have.
Food outlets that received an E-grade were allowed to apply for a re-grade after 90 days.
Dyssel said because businesses were re-graded regularly, its list of E-grade food outlets changed frequently.
That was the case for Matsu Sushi and Wok Wok in Westcity Waita¯kere who were regarded A and B respectively after initial E-gradings earlier this year.
A Consumer NZ spokesperson said people had the right to expect the foods they bought were prepared in hygienic premises.
‘‘A restaurant getting an E grade falls a long way short of the standards consumers would expect.’’
Central Auckland had two E-grade food outlets and north Auckland had one.
