The rise and fall of pop stars

- DEBRIN FOXCROFT

Singer Boh Runga says young female musicians are being forced into a box by the music industry.

The lead singer of Stellar* is part of the line-up for the NZ AllStars Marley: Celebrate the Legend concert at The Trusts Arena on November 30.

Ahead of the concert, Runga said the Kiwi music industry has shifted to a place where artists can make it big quickly.

‘‘It is very media driven and social media driven and unfortunately that’s our world now and it invites nastiness and trolling.’’

Fellow singer Annie Crummer agreed it was a different music landscape.

‘‘Even my generation is different to hers, I was still trying to use the abacus,’’ she said.

‘‘Back then you had to post up your own posters. You had to really hustle. But you just did it because we didn’t know any other way.

She is set to perform some of Bob Marley’s greatest hits with a super-group of 21 artists at the concert in West Auckland.

The super-group included Tiki Taane, Che Fu, and Anna Coddington.

While all bringing something different to the table, the musicians are joined by an appreciation of Bob Marley

‘‘I think with Marley, he relates to the culture here, and the people and the spirit and the mana we have here in New Zealand,’’ Crummer said.

‘‘People who aren’t familiar with his music will be really surprised what had been downloaded in the lives of his music.

‘‘They will be singing along going, yeah, I know this one.’’

Runga said Marley’s music transcended everything.

‘‘Even for people who don’t really know his work, it’s a show full of love.’’
