CORNWALLIS FIRE

A large scrub fire forced several West Auckland residents to evacuate their homes. The blaze broke out in a 400 metre by 500m patch of scrub on the Cornwallis peninsula about 7.30pm on November 15. A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesman said the fire had been put out before daybreak the next day.

WHATIPU RESCUE

An Auckland rescue helicopter was tasked to Destructio­n Gully, north Manukau Heads, at Whatipu for two people trapped by the tide on November 12. Crew were called by Maritime Police about 4pm to the male in his 60s and a woman in her 40s. The pair were unharmed.

YOUNG AUTHORS

Two young writers are among those published in a new book – Michelle Kenyon from Oratia District School and Theo Robb Markham from Te Atatu¯ Intermedia­te. Only 10 stories could be chosen for the book, with judging based on plot developmen­t, positive messaging and the use of a theme. Written for children by children, all proceeds from book sales will benefit the Starship Foundation. Triumphs, Twists and Tasty

FRANCHISE WINNER

A Henderson businessma­n has been honoured at the Westpac Franchise Awards. Stephen Brown won the field manager of the year in the over 500,000 category. Brown coaches 19 Columbus Coffee franchises.

MEATSTOCK

The festival for meat lovers is back next year. Meatstock, The Music and Meat Festival will be held at the ASB Showground­s, Greenlane on February 24-25, 2018. Local craft beer company Liberty Brewing will offer refreshmen­ts, as butchers and barbecuers compete for cash. Two of the meatiest names in barbecue, Tuffy Stone and
