EUTHANASIA DEBATE

-

I have seen my late mother succumb to dementia. It was a tough journey for Mum but she maintained her dignity in the rest home and the rest home hospital dementia care where she was cared for extremely well for over two years.

In her final two weeks she gave up because she no longer knew how to eat or drink. Mum was an intelligent woman and decided herself that she had enough of her debilitating vascular dementia and as the parts of the brain that make you hungry and thirsty had shut down she passed away peacefully after two weeks without sustenance. There is no way that I could support this voluntary euthanasia bill. No other human being has the right to assist another related or unrelated human being’s demise.

Dementia is becoming more prevalent in New Zealand. I guess quite a number of those afflicted go into meltdown in the last two weeks of their lives and naturally stop eating and drinking. So they have natural deaths, the primary cause of death on the death certificate is inanition.

This is my learned opinion on the bill.

No Power of Attorney for Care has a legal right to assist in their parent, relative or friend’s death as under our current law the carer would be charged with manslaughter or murder. This is my opinion only.

SOUR MILK

Regarding sour milk (Western Leader, February 22). For many years I’ve made milk from milk powder without any trouble. I have no car so I shop at Pak ‘n Save, Alderman Drive, Henderson. They have two brands and two different prices. I find the cheaper one very good. One kilogram makes 8 litres of milk. Let it stand for 10 minutes and keep in the fridge.

CALLS FOR WINE MUSEUM

Let him have his wine museum on his family land as long as it is paid for by private backing. Can’t see any problem. It’s called Corban Estate for a reason and the Art Centre is in the old Winery buildings. Say no more.

RENTAL MARKET ISSUES

It’s hard out there and getting worse. Our rental is about to be upped another $20 which is making us look but there is nothing around our price level. We also have the one cat which means (like all dog owners) we don’t get a second look because we have animals. I don’t think our rental is worth what we are paying but the cost of having a rental property means we get that cost passed onto us. Rental prices in Te Atatu¯ South are climbing and the number of houses that have sold in that past 12 months have been huge.
