I went to Clark’s Wholesalers on Lincoln Rd to purchase a used washing machine but was surprised to see an imaginative colourful floral and herb display planted in parts of disposed appliances, such as shiny washing machine drums for pots, and doorless horizontal fridges for flower boxes. If we are to care for our planet we need to value used and repaired appliances to conserve our natural resources. Adrian Sharp has run this business for years and will tell you how appliances work, and how they can be fixed. This business like other second hand businesses supports environmentallyfriendly living. We need to move away from our obsession with new fashionable items that last a short time and end up in landfill.

Re-cycled appliances are the way of the future. My front garden consists of used washing machine drums, old plastic bins, and a filing cabinet laying flat to make a vegetable box. It’s my way of gardening on top of solid clay. I collected these items during the inorganic collections we used to have. Such activities may not on their own save the planet, but some of us are trying in our own quiet way to do our best. CAROLINE MABRY
