Chicks with Kicks ready for race day

- DEBRIN FOXCROFT

An Auckland mum’s training deadline has arrived.

Alana Boyce will make it to the starting line of the Round the Bays fun run on March 4, a feat she didn’t think was possible just a few months ago.

‘‘Being part of the Chicks with Kicks team has made the idea of doing a race possible,’’ Boyce said.

‘‘Training for this has made me think, yes, I can do it,’’ she said.

‘‘My mum and I might even have a little bit of a jog along the way.’’

Boyce entered the race with her mother Jasmine Taylor and sister Alisha Keoghan.

Having a team made the difference, she said.

‘‘If you are someone like me, then it’s easier to have people to do it with,’’ Boyce said.

After six weeks of training in the gym, Boyce said she was much more active then she had been.

However, there have challenges.

‘‘I hurt my back and that kept me out of it for a while,’’ the young mum said.

‘‘Also, [the] gym is quite hard when you have a small child, trying to organise care,’’ she said. been

Boyce’s daughter just turned fivemonths-old.

Despite the challenges, Boyce was already thinking about the next race and ways she can train with her family.

‘‘I’ve learned that if you have kids, you have to include them in your training. If you have a little one, then they can go in the prams. If they’re older, then you just need to go out and kick a ball.’’

Keoghan said the training regime set by the personal trainer at West Wave Pool and Leisure Centre helped her get ready for the race.

She said she also enjoyed the time with her family.

‘‘I have had so much fun at the gym using the pool for waterwalking with Mum and Alana,’’ she said.

Boyce encouraged everyone to give it a go.
