FIRE IN HENDERSON
Auckland firecrews contained a fire at a small, two-storey unit in Henderson on March 2. Three fire trucks were called to the Great North Rd blaze at about 7.30pm, a Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said. All occupants from the block of units were evacuated without injury, but a small dog was treated for smoke inhalation by the SPCA.
NEW INCUBATOR NEEDED
The Well Foundation, a charity that supports the Waitemata¯ District Health Board, is fundraising to purchase a new incubator. Another $100,000 is needed in order to purchase the incubator that will transport babies from Waita¯kere Hospital Special Care Baby Unit to Starship Children’s Hospital for treatment. OWLS ON DISPLAY
New Lynn Mall will display a large owl designed by local artist Rogan James until May to help raise funds for Child Cancer Foundation. Four West Auckland schools - Arahoe, Avondale, Blockhouse Bay Primary and
New Lynn schools - are also designing four small owlets for a competition. Displayed in the shopping centre, the owlet with the most votes wins $2000.
IGNITE PROGRAMME
A mentoring and training free 12-week programme for young people gets underway on April 1. The Ignite Programme engaged with young Aucklanders, aged between 15-18, and would offer a hands-on approach to the music and events industry, seminars, workshops and venue tours. Participants would also produce music or a song at the end of the programme.
CHOPPER CHALLENGE
Four West Aucklanders will compete in this year’s Chopper Swim Challenge to raise money for the Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust. The challenge will take place on March 26 with 100 people swimming a 20 kilometre stretch of open sea between Waiheke Island and Auckland City.
