26,000 run for charity

- TARANNUM SHAIKH

More than 26,000 people walked, jogged, cycled or ran their hardest at the 46th Ports of Auckland Round the Bays on Sunday.

The 8.4 kilometre run had Aucklanders wending their way along the waterfront from Quay St to St Heliers Bay.

This year’s top three were head to head, finishing within seconds of each other.

Winner was once again Lynfield’s Jonathon Jackson with a time of 27 minutes, seven seconds.

Second place went to Dave Ridley from South Melbourne who ran the course in 27 minutes, 15 seconds.

Coming in third at 27 minutes, 23 seconds was Glendowie’s Tom Moyes.

Mt Eden’s Olivia Burne was the first woman over the line just two minutes later at 29 minutes, nine seconds.

Juilette Foley, also from Glendowie, was second at 32 minutes, 40 seconds and third was Parnell’s Zoe Garrett at 35 minutes, 17 seconds.

Greenlane’s Weely Churchur revved things up in his wheelchair, coming over the line at 43 minutes, 41 seconds.

The annual race supported three charities this year by donating $50,000 through entry fees to the Lifeline support helpline, South Auckland-based Riding for the Disabled and Spirit of Adventure Trust.

Participants were also able to give a one-off donation for a charity of their choice.
