WHY THIS IS OUR YEAR!

Coach Stephen’s dream team The Kiwi legend’s ready to unleash a storm

-

He spent years across the ditch coaching Aussie league teams, as well as taking the helm of the New Zealand national side, but new head coach Stephen Kearney has finally turned his attention to the Warriors.

We catch up with Stephen to chat about his dreams for the club, why this could be the Warriors’ year, and his rather surprising dreams and passions!

How does it feel coaching an NZ NRL team for the first time?

It’s a great honour. Being a proud Kiwi myself, there is nothing better than to be back home with the New Zealand Vodafone Warriors.

Was it a big decision to come home to Aotearoa? How much did the family factor in?

I was certainly excited about coming home, but having lived in Australia for such a long time, we have carved out a life for ourselves there, so there are adjustments to make and I appreciate the support of my family so much.

What’s your most enduring memory from your time as a Warrior?

There is no doubt it is the first game in 1995 against the Broncos in front of a full Mt Smart Stadium, plus of course the wonderful friendships I’ve made along the way.

Will you have divided loyalties when the Warriors play the Storm?

I can assure all the fans my heart, soul and focus is 100% on the Vodafone Warriors!

What did coaching in Australia teach you?

I was fortunate to work with a number of excellent people and through those experiences, I feel I’ve developed my skills, knowledge and of course experience as a coach. It broadens your perspective and reminds you that in coaching, you are always learning.

What is it about the game of league that makes it so great?

Family. League is incredibly family-focused. It was very much part of growing up and there was no doubt I would have a career within the sport once I retired from playing. The Vodafone Warriors epitomises everything that is great about the sport – a place to grow and strive for excellence within a supportive and caring environment.

Why is your nickname Mooks?

My grandfather would call me Moko as I was the eldest grandchild in the family. Then over the years, it was shortened to Mooks.

When you’re not on the

field, what do you like to do with your spare time?

Spending time with my family is a priority. Outside of that, I like to keep fit and healthy. Part of this is practising Bikram yoga. I’m also passionate about cooking, but I just don’t do enough of it.

What are you most proud of?

My wife Piri and my two daughters, Samantha and Isabella – they are beautiful people and they mean the world to me.

Do you have a philosophy that underpins your life?

Strive to be the best you can be in all aspects of your life.

Do you have any other dreams that aren’t league-related?

I would love to take Piri on a long, food-related discovery tour of the south of France and the Amalfi Coast.

Why is this the year that the Warriors could take it out?

I don’t focus on results. I focus on all of the aspects required – the football skills, the mental skills required, fitness and tacticss – to play in the toughest competition in the world at the very highest level, consistently. I have a great coaching team with me and I’m thrilled with the group of players I am working with.
