AMY’S A GOLDIE GIRL!

The funny girl’s captivated by her comedic idol

If there was anyone who could convince Oscar-winning actress Goldie Hawn to return to film after a 15-year break, it would be Amy Schumer. The hilarious 35-year-old stars alongside legend Goldie, 71, in Snatched, a comedy about a mum and daughter who are kidnapped while on vacation in South America. The Emmy-award winning funnygirl and bestselling author tells Woman’sDay all about her new film.

Is it true you persuaded Goldie to return to making movies again?

Yes, it’s true! I was on a plane from New York to Los Angeles and Goldie was sitting a couple of rows ahead of me. I was so excited and completely star-struck. I had already read the script at that time, and I went up to Goldie and said, ‘Hi, I’m Amy. I’m a comedienne. There is a movie I’m doing and I really want you to play my mom in it.’ And she said, ‘OK, honey, sure!’ Then a couple of months later, we

were at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards and Goldie was there with her daughter Kate Hudson, and I went over to her again. It didn’t take that much persuasion to get her involved – Goldie was very enthusiastic and we started plotting together.

Have you always been a big fan of Goldie’s work?

I don’t think anyone has made me laugh more on the big screen than Goldie. I have always loved Private Benjamin and Overboard – that film was huge in our house when I was growing up.

Snatched is about a mother and daughter’s bond. What is your relationship with your own mum like?

We were so close until the age of 12, at which point I became her mum in a way. That was when my parents divorced and my dad was sick with multiple sclerosis. It was hard. But in the last two years, we have had a reinvention of our relationship. I‘ve made peace with everything that happened. This movie is a way of saying to her, “I know you did the best you could.” I am so grateful to my mom.

And you’re close to your dad?

Yes, we have always got along really well, but we have become really close over the last five years.

What was one of the funniest scenes that you filmed with Goldie?

It was very physical – there is so much action in the film. I have to pick Goldie up in different scenes and carry her around like a baby. When we had to climb out of a window or something, I would say to her, “What if I hold you like this?” And then she gets on my back and that became a running gag – I kept carrying her. It wasn’t scripted and it made us laugh the whole time.
