Woman’s Day (New Zealand)

Editor’s letter

-

I’ve had such a crack-up week. I’ve been given stick and hurled it right back (with a smile!) to hilarious radio guys from Auckland, Hawke’s Bay, Manawatu, Dunedin and Invercargill. I’ve been interrogated, hassled and schmoozed. And I absolutely loved it.

You see, Woman’s Day is on the search for New Zealand’s Hottest Radio Hunk. Hopefully you’ve heard about our competition by now, but if you haven’t, check out how to nominate your secret radio crush on page 86 or hop on our website nowtolove.co.nz immediately!

Basically, it’s a cheeky contest to celebrate some of the gorgeous men behind the mics in the broadcasting biz – pop DJs, shock jocks, silver foxes and thinking women’s crumpets! It’s all meant to be a bit of fun, but it’s sparked wild rivalry between radio blokes – and not just those on competing stations. Would-be radio hunks on the same networks (and even the same shows!) have been verbally brawling over who should win the inaugural trophy.

I seriously wounded a few egos by not including some mug shots on our promo page – photos that were only ever meant to be thought starters. If the guys had bothered to read the promo copy, rather than sulking about not seeing their photo and getting into a tizz, they’d have understood the search for New Zealand’s Hottest Radio Hunk is open to all. Once they got this message, they lifted their bottom lips off the ground, rallied their listeners and the nominations flooded in. You’ll be surprised about who is leading the pack! I can’t tell you who just yet, but I can say a few dark horses from the regions are rivalling the national guys for the title. I love it!

What makes someone hunkworthy is totally subjective and voters have been, shall we say, creative with their interpretation of the word. I like that in radio – unlike telly – it’s not all about looks. Women first fall for an announcer’s voice, their humour and their intelligence ... often having no idea what he looks like at all. In fact, it’s a relationship you enter into blind. In next week’s Woman’s

Day, we will reveal your top 10 finalists for New Zealand’s Hottest Radio Hunk – and then the real competition begins. Cast your votes, girls!
