For Cara Delevingne, exposing weakness doesn’t come naturally. So to summon tears in her new sci-fi film Valerian and the City of a Thousand

Planets, the model says, “I had to understand vulnerability. I had to find strength to let my walls down.” And when all else failed, the 24-year-old, who plays cosmic operative Laureline, relied on her co-star Dane DeHaan, 31, who plays fellow agent Valerian. “I had him eat garlic and blow in my face!” she laughs. We chat to the duo about their hot new space flick.

How would you describe Valerian and Laureline?

Dane: Valerian is a space bro. He has a perfect success rate as an agent and because of that, he’s cocky. But he knows he’s just lucky and that he’s nothing without Laureline. She’s the brains behind the operation.

Cara: Laureline makes sure he doesn’t accidentally kill himself. She also follows her heart more than anything, which I admire. She can’t help but fall for him.

How did you prepare for your roles?

Dane: There was a lot of training. Before we filmed each day, I trained for two hours to make sure I was in good enough shape to be able to do everything that was demanded of me.

Cara: I wish there were more stunts! Honestly, I had so much fun on the wires and doing the fight choreography. When I was a kid, I wanted to be a daredevil.

Did you pal around with co-star Rihanna?

Dane: She’s so cool! Cara, you knew her already right?

Cara: We met when I was modelling in the Victoria’s Secret fashion show and she was performing. Now

we’re doing a film together. Director Luc Besson wanted her to be vulnerable and was like, “Pretend your album doesn’t do well.” She was like, “You don’t know how to make me upset because I wouldn’t give a s***!”

Any on-set pranks?

Cara: Well, there is an incredible blooper reel! Dane would love to slip on a couple of lines. There were a couple of things he just couldn’t say. I tried so hard not to laugh, but it’s impossible to not.

Dane, you became a dad recently with your wife Anna Wood. Which is harder – saving mankind or fatherhood?

Dane: People always say, “You’re not going to sleep. Fatherhood is tiring.” But there have been movies where I’ve slept less. So I think I was prepared!
