Our first dates led to love

CLINTON C & JAIME RANDELL

While most people might opt for dinner or a drink as a first date, The Edge radio star Clinton Randell took to romance to great heights by organising a bungee-jump off of Auckland’s Harbour Bridge for fo him and his now-wife Jaime. However, the adventurous outing o fell seriously flat for Jaime, who w has all but blocked it from her h memory. “I was hoping it would be fun, but b Jaime was scared of heights and a wasn’t very happy that the bungee b people put her in an unflattering harness and overalls,” laughs Clint, 32. “Then they weighed her and wrote her weight in large red numbers on her hand in permanent marker.”

And the 2004 date only got worse. Clint continues, “My mum and dad decided that it would be great to watch, showing up unannounced to take photos of me and this girl I had only hung out with once prior. We now call it ‘the family bungee date’!”

Still looking unimpressed after all these years, Jaime, 31, adds, “I don’t really class that as an actual date. Our first date in my eyes is when we went for fish and chips.”

While the bungee was a flop, the couple – who met in school – did fall madly in love. They got married in 1999 and have welcomed two children, son Ty, one, and daughter Cameron, two.

However, Jaime didn’t make it easy for Clint. He laughs, “It wasn’t until date number five that we finally made out in the front of my new Mitsubishi. I should’ve bought that car weeks earlier!”
