Woman’s Day (New Zealand)

Editor’s note

-

There’s nothing like a fresh season of Marriedat FirstSight to get the women in the office oohing and aahing. After a new episode airs, we can’t get our day underway until we’ve had a group recap and a cackle.

I was slow to start the latest Aussie version, so I’ve been bingeing – and I’m loving it, although my husband is rolling his eyes. He’s glued to the Winter Olympics while I’m watching a whole other type of sport! I know the

MAFS premise is somewhat bonkers – having a wedding before you’ve met your partner – but I still get completely caught up watching all those lovely brides, weddings and honeymoons. It’s silly, but it’s romantic.

I’m only sad they miss out on the lovely stage of being engaged. My husband proposed in Fiji and although I’d never been one of those girls who dreamed of their wedding, that changed. I really enjoyed the engagement phase, happy in a chapter full of hope, excitement and promise – and I love being married.

We have two quite different engagement stories in the mag this week. It was picture-perfect when Shortland

Street star Ben Barrington went down on bended knee to propose to his longtime love Kristie Fergus as the sun set in Fiji (page 16). It couldn’t have been scripted better! And how gorgeous their little daughter Harley will be flower girl.

In a moving story of true love and devotion, Ra Redden proposed to his sweetheart Katie Powell on the banks of the Avon River in Christchurch from his wheelchair (page 42). The pair, who met a year ago, have endured the hardest of journeys since Ra was left paralysed from the shoulders down after a kickboxing fight.

Katie has been by his side ever since he was taken to hospital on a stretcher, moved cities and put in an induced coma for 10 days. And she will continue to be there for him while he undergoes intensive rehabilitation for a long time to come. It’s a beautiful story.

Let’s not let the sad news of Jennifer Aniston’s shock split from Justin Theroux dampen our love of romance at Woman’sDay!
