Woman’s Day (New Zealand)

Editor’s note

-

I’m a Taurus bull, year of the boar, with the constitution of an ox. Yes, I’m pretty down to earth and like to think I’m made of fairly tough stuff. But I nearly cracked this week.

I fell sick while my husband was away – as was my work husband Seb – and then colleagues began to drop like flies with various versions of the plague. So when both kids got gastro one day after the other, I was wobbly.

I switched between work and mum/nurse mode as best I could, but by the time I was dealing with latenight linen changes, a stuffed washing machine beeping continually, trips to the laundromat with a sick kid in tow and vomit in my favourite shoes (true story), let’s just say I’ve been in better moods. I certainly didn’t refrain from sharing my “poor me” monologue and lapping up the sympathy vote.

But there’s nothing like reading Woman’sDay to put life in perspective and remind you not to sweat the small stuff.

If you want to know about a truly resilient woman, look no further than Adine Wilson’s story on page 20. Now, she is strong. Our former Silver Ferns captain broke her neck after a fall just over a year ago and she’s honestly lucky to be alive. With emergency surgery and the best medical treatment, loving care from friends and family, and the power of positivity, Adine is thankfully now OK.

But she says she has changed for good – her “edges have softened” and she lives in the present. She’s certainly not one to look for sympathy or attention, and kept her story private for a long time – but she is also forever grateful and wanted to give thanks to those who have supported her.

We use the word “inspirational” a lot in Woman’sDay – but Adine, you truly are. Thanks to the Wilson family – Adine, Jeff, Lincoln and Harper – for sharing this incredible story of love, courage and gratitude.
