Woman’s Day (New Zealand)

Editor’s note

- SEBASTIAN SEB VAN DER ZWAN DEPUTY EDITOR EDITOR, WOM WOMAN’S DAY

Due to a terrible case of FOMO – that’s “fear of missing out” – I’m busy most nights, meeting friends, hanging with the whanau, seeing movies, going to plays or attending workrelated functions. It means I’m rarely bored, but it also means I’m hardly ever home.

But last week, due to an attack of the sniffles and a very tickly throat – the doctor mentioned whooping cough, but my flatmate has diagnosed “man flu” – I spent every evening at home … and I have to admit, I enjoyed it. I haven’t watched so much TV since I had assignments due at university, although I wouldn’t say it was relaxing.

I was shouting at the screen during Dancing with the Stars. First came David Seymour’s hard-to-stomach twerking, then top performers Suzy Cato and Shavaughn Ruakere ended up in the bottom two. Maybe it was the medication I’m taking, but my eyes welled up with tears when the beloved children’s entertainer was sent packing after her sassy samba to one of my favourite jams, “Bootylicious” by Destiny’s Child.

I’m super-excited to bring you our stunning shoot with Suzy and her gorgeous children on page 16. I was delighted to read the kids appreciate how many Kiwis grew up wishing Suzy could be their mum – and I was surprised to find out she’s about to turn 50. Suzy, if you read this, please send me your secrets!

Meanwhile, the new reality series Heartbreak Island also had me crying out from the couch. I just want to reach into the TV, hug some of the contestants and tell them it’s going to be OK. But if popularity is causing problems, at least body issues aren’t a factor for many of them, as our story on page 30 shows.

If you’ve been glued to the box like I have, do drop us a line. We’d love to know your thoughts on both shows.

Keep warm and have a great week!
