Woman’s Day (New Zealand)

Editor’s letter

- SIDO KITCHIN EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, WOMAN’S DAY

Iknow we use the words “miracle baby” liberally here at Woman’sDay, but I think you’ll agree that Toni Street’s lovely little Lachie well and truly is.

When you see the cherub in the arms of his besotted mum, you can feel the love and intense bond between them, and there’s absolutely no doubt whose child he is.

But just a few weeks ago, Lachie was in the tum of another mum! Toni’s best friend Sophie Braggins gave the most amazing gift by being a surrogate for this special baby boy.

For nine long months we’ve followed Toni’s rollercoaster journey. She’s run the whole gamut of emotions – joy, fear, sickness and elation – and to finally see her cradle Lachie is one of the loveliest moments I’ve had as an editor. I still marvel at the wonder of modern medicine. It’s a beautiful thing.

And isn’t wee Lachie absolutely delicious? What a gorgeous boy. Our love and congratulations go out to Toni, Sophie and their families. Lachie’s arrival is wonderful news.

Sadly, I’ve often found good news comes hand in hand with bad and it was devastating to learn of the loss of Toni’s TVNZ colleague Greg Boyed this week. His death has touched the nation and many of us are still reeling in grief.

We will miss his warmth, kindness and brilliance on our screens. The reverse side of love is unbearable loss, and our hearts go out to Greg’s family and friends.
