Itching FOR A FIX
Get ahead of dryness and flakes with these simple scalp solutions
Many of us suffer from a dry and itchy scalp at times, but dandruff is not always to blame. While dandruff is one of the most common reasons for an itchy head, if coupled with dryness, it’s likely caused by something else. Consider one of these easy resolutions for a flake-free scalp.
Switch your shampoo
Shampoos containing sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) can be drying and can lead to irritation and redness, while those containing silicones can strip the scalp of moisture, and leave hair feeling dry and weighed down. That’s why it’s a good idea to change to a more gentle, siliconefree shampoo – especially if you have a more sensitive scalp.
Use a clarifying shampoo
A penchant for hair-styling products could be the culprit, which is why it’s a good idea to use a clarifying shampoo as part of your hair-washing routine. Hair sprays, gels and volumising mousses are just some of the products that have a tendency to clog the scalp. Use a clarifying shampoo once a week or as needed to get rid of product build-up.
Avoid hot water
As much as you might enjoy hot showers, the rapid temperature change could be doing more harm than good. Increased scalp dryness can occur in winter when moving from the cold outdoors to a heated environment, but is also caused by washing your hair in hot water, which in turn not only dries out the hair shaft but also irritates the scalp further. Try washing your hair with warm water instead, and finish off with a cold rinse to promote a healthier head and shinier strands.
Consider your diet
As with your skin, dryness can be caused by a lack of oils in your diet; a healthy scalp really does start with a healthy diet. Take it from Victoria Beckham, who eats salmon – an excellent source of omega-3 – every single day for a glowing complexion. As well as oily fish, nuts and avocado are rich in fatty acids, which help improve inflammation as well. Up your water intake while you’re at it – not drinking enough shows on your scalp as it does with your skin.
See an expert
If it isn’t dandruff, another possible cause could be skin inflammation or psoriasis. Certain products and treatments containing harsh chemicals may cause an allergic reaction or increased sensitivity that ultimately dries out your scalp. When dandruff shampoos don’t work or your sensitivity fails to go away, it might be time to see a dermatologist or trichologist, who can diagnose you correctly and help find the right remedy.
