Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Spiderman and Ant-man are just some of the superheroes who have scored their own movies. But never before has Marvel produced a film centred around a female hero – that is, until Brie Larson’s CaptainMarvel.

As the hotly anticipated flick hits cinemas this week, the importance of the movie doesn’t go past the confident 29-year-old. Brie tells, “I find the character so inspiring that whenever I feel nervous and scared, I can turn to her and I feel like, ‘No, I got this.’ That feels really awesome. I have the same awe over her that a lot of her fans do.”

Captain Marvel – aka Carol Danvers – is an ex-air force pilot whose DNA is fused with that of an alien race following an accident. She soon develops superpowers and joins the elite military team known as Starforce.

While Brie’s embraced the superhero now, she did take a longg time to accept the part. “II had a meeting with Marvel and what we discussed was they wanted to make a big feminist movie,” she recalls. “I remember going home and being like, ‘S***, am I going to do this?!’”

But as a proud feminist herself, eventually she decided it was an opportunity she just couldn’t pass up. Brie explains, “As I’ve grown, I’ve noticed that these superhero movies, and the Marvel movies in particular, have so much meaning in them. . You can have a great time and just enjoy it, but you can also be left with some really deep philosophical questions. That combo is really powerful and I’mIm proud to be part of it.” it.
