Woman’s Day (New Zealand)

Editor’s letter

- SIDO KITCHIN EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, WOMAN’S DAY

It’s the week before Christmas, the time when panic-buying, excessive list writing, menu anxiety, flocking to heaving malls and the eternal search for wrapping paper and sticky tape is in full swing.

But strangely, I feel calm. I’m not going to engage in the Nightmare Before Christmas madness. I’m determined to glide towards December 25 with a serene smile. All is calm, all is bright!

Well that’s today’s theory. And by the time you could prove otherwise, I’ll be camping in the Coromandel with family, friends and the joy of no phone reception – putting the pressure of Christmas well behind me.

My determination to remain tranquil was tested this morning when I found out my husband’s trip to the butcher to order the ham two weeks ago ended with the purchase of meat for steak sandwiches that day – but nothing of the swine variety ordered for the most important family meal of the year being hosted at our place. Perhaps the fact I sat in the car with my feet up while he went to suss the ham means I’m somehow to blame for the fact he “forgot” the purpose of the butcher visit in the 30 seconds between getting out of the vehicle and gazing at fine meats.

Yet, I’m determined to remain relaxed. Instead of getting annoyed, I’ve gently texted the word HAM!!! (with a piggy emoji) to him three times and carried on.

If we do end up sans ham at Christmas, I’ll happily remind the kids we shouldn’t get caught up in the world of excessive shopping and eating, and really it’s a day for togetherness. It’s timely to tell them that the best things in life are free – being in the company of friends and family. They know I believe it’s better to give than receive, especially when it comes from the heart. All this is true. But just between you and me, I’ll be a little bitter if I don’t munch on a ham and mustard sandwich on Boxing Day!

Bucketloads of love and happiness to you lovely people this Christmas. I hope you have a joyous day. And for those of you who are alone this festive season, please know you’ll always have a friend in Woman’sDay.

Merry Christmas everyone!
