Fifty-one people died after a gunman opened fire on hundreds of men, women and children. Said Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern of those who fell, “They are us. The person who has perpetuated this violence against us is not. There is no place in New Zealand for such acts of extreme and unprecedented violence.”

WHAKAARI/ WHITE ISLAND TRAGEDY New Zealand faced another of its darkest days in history on December 9 when Whakaari/ White Island erupted with 47 people – mostly tourists – on it at the time. While there were stories of incredible heroism, more than a dozen lost their lives in the explosion.

GRETA THUNBERG

At the beginning of 2019, few people had heard of Swedish teen Greta Thunberg. By December, the 16-year-old was a household name, famously chiding world leaders at the United Nations, “How dare you!” in relation to their lack of urgency to combat climate change.
