KOBE’S TRAGIC DATE WITH FATE
We mourn the loss of an NBA legend and his darling girl
Kobe Bryant understood life is short. “Things change in the blink of an eye. People go to work and don’t come back. One minute they’re living and the next minute they’re not,” the basketball superstar wrote in an essay shortly after 9/11. Tragically his life, too, ended way too soon.
The sports legend had no idea when he boarded a helicopter with his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and five other people last week that those were the last few moments of his life.
Ironically, Kobe, 41, had taken to using helicopters as a way to spend more time with his family and less time stuck in traffic, but ultimately it cost him all the time he had left in the world: as his chopper headed from Los Angeles to a basketball game west of the city, it hit early-morning fog and ploughed into a hillside, instantly killing everyone on board.
As news of the tragedy broke, ripples of grief spread around the world for the man who’d brought joy to millions and who seemed invincible.
Born in 1978 to NBA player Joe Bryant and his wife Pamela, Kobe was named after a type of steak that his parents had seen on a restaurant menu. At age three, he began playing basketball and showed such promise that the Charlotte Hornets drafted him straight out of high school.
Days later he was traded to the LA Lakers – becoming, at 18, the youngest player ever to start an NBA game – and for the next 20 seasons rose through the ranks to become one of the most celebrated players of all time.
And while he made scoring on the court look easy, he regularly arrived two hours early to practice to hit the gym. After his first season in the NBA,
he even turned down a role in a Spike Lee movie in favour of more practice time.
Off court, his life was equally as colourful.
In 1999, three years into his skyrocketing career, Kobe met high school student Vanessa Laine while she was working as a background model for a music video. Just six months later they were engaged and in 2001, when Vanessa was 18 and Kobe was 22, they tied the knot.
Their first daughter, Natalia, was born in 2003 and that same year Kobe was arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 19-yearold hospitality worker in a hotel in Colorado. The charges were later dropped when his accuser refused to testify but Kobe publicly acknowledged, “Although I truly believe this encounter between us was consensual … I now understand how she feels that she did not consent to this encounter.”
He ended up settling the subsequent civil suit out of court and his reputation took a hit – but even more painful was the agony he caused his wife.
Vanessa appeared alongside him at a press conference where he admitted cheating on her and told her tearfully, “You’re my backbone. You’re a blessing. You’re a piece of my heart. You’re the air I breathe and you’re the strongest person I know. I’m so sorry for having to put you through this and having to put our family through this.”
The 1.98m-tall star went on to buy Vanessa an “apology ring” – an extremely rare eight-carat purple diamond reportedly worth $6 million – and in 2006 they welcomed their second daughter Gianna.
By 2011, their relationship was in trouble again. Vanessa filed for divorce citing “irreconcilable differences”, but two years later they called the divorce off and in 2016 had their third daughter, Bianka. Then, in June last year, they celebrated the arrival of daughter number four, Capri.
Four years ago, as his injuries began to mount, the five-time NBA champ and two-time Olympic gold medal winner, who went by the nickname The Black Mamba, stepped down from the game that had made him both a household name and a multi-millionaire. Friends say he enjoyed retirement as much as he’d loved playing.
He won an Oscar for the animated short film Dear Basketball, opened a sports academy to help athletes improve, oversaw a series of sports fantasy children’s books and started a podcast called ThePunies to inspire children suffering from self-doubt and anxiety.
More than anything, say friends, he revelled in family life with Vanessa, 37, Natalia, 17, Gianna, 13, Bianka, three, and Capri, seven months.
The star was delighted when Gianna set her sights on following in his footsteps and becoming a basketball pro. He helped her in every way he could and, on January 26, the dedicated dad was taking his girl to a game when their chopper crashed into the steep, bush-strewn hills of Calabasas.
That night, soon after rescue crews confirmed there were no survivors, the Grammy Awards in Hollywood hit a sombre note.
Host Alicia Keys, 39, paid tribute to the star, saying, “We’re all feeling crazy sadness right now because earlier today … Los Angeles, America and the whole wide world lost a hero.”
Two days later chat-show host Ellen DeGeneres paid tribute to the sports hero who was a personal friend and who had died on her 62nd birthday.
Dabbing away tears, Ellen said, “Life is short, and it’s fragile, and we don’t know how many birthdays we have. So just – you don’t have to have a birthday to celebrate, just celebrate life.”
Three days after Kobe’s death, Vanessa posted a moving tribute to her beloved husband and daughter, saying, “I’m not sure what our lives hold beyond today.” She thanked the millions of people who showed their support.
Friends say she is trying her best to be strong for her three remaining daughters and is taking comfort in Kobe’s love for them all.
In his 2018 Oscars speech, the star had gushed, “Being a father is the thing I am most proud of in this world – it’s my greatest accomplishment,” adding later, “I’ve learned so much, but perhaps the most profound thing has been the fierce, unconditional love you have for your children when you become a parent.
“I’m blessed to have had that experience four times now and there’s nothing more powerful in this world.”
