LEAVING SCHITT ’S CREEK

The actress says goodbye to her beloved comedy

-

For the last five years, Catherine O’Hara has been making audiences laugh on the hit series Schitt’s Creek. But the project has brought no-one more joy than the actress herself.

“I don’t know what will top this for me,” Catherine, 66, says of playing former soap opera star Moira Rose on the beloved comedy, which will come to an end this year after six seasons.

“It’s really hard to let go! I was spoiled with the scripts and the opportunities that my character was given,” she continues. “[But I think] they really wrapped up beautifully this season.”

The mum-of-two chats with Woman’sDay about her co-stars, her classic films and Hollywood’s obsession with Schitt’sCreek.

What will you miss most abouttheshow?

I’ll miss working in Toronto; I’m from there. I’ll also miss the great crew we had. CBC [Canadian Broadcasting Corporation] was great at giving my co-stars and the show’s creators, Dan and Eugene Levy, the freedom to make the show they wanted to make – I don’t know why more people don’t do that.

You’ ve been friends with Eugene since the late’ 70s, when you both star red on the sketch series Second City Television. Do you enjoy working together?

It’s lovely! And when we work together, it’s really all about the work. Even if you have a disagreement, you know that everyone’s trying to make the project the best it could possibly be. So it’s just such a lovely environment.

Your character Mo ira has worn some incredible out fits over the years. Do you haveafavourite?

I’ll tell you, we were evacuated in the Getty fire (last year in LA), and I kept running back and forth in the house for passports, pictures and all the things you’re supposed to grab …and I kept running by this rack of Moira’s clothes. I finally just grabbed some items – including six or seven Givenchy

Luckily, we were spared. Are you surprised at how many celebrities lovetheshow?

It’s really quite lovely. At the Emmys, the Game ofThrones people were talking to us about Schitt’s Creek. Nicole Kidman came up to me at another event and I kept trying to tell her why I love her, but she just wouldn’t have it. She just kept talking

about our show! Your career seems to behotterthanever.Do youfeellucky?

There are a lot of older women working, thank goodness. But I’ve been able to do this show for six seasons and be ridiculous and funny and wear a great wardrobe. I feel lucky. Any advice for young actorsoutthere?
