Woman’s Day (New Zealand)

Editor’s letter

- SIDO KITCHIN EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, WOMAN’S DAY

As the reality of a worldwide coronavirus pandemic hits home, there’s no denying we are in a genuine period of adversity and uncertainty.

I understand it’s an anxious time, with many of us preparing for weeks of social distancing and self-isolation, supermarket stocks running low, working remotely, schools potentially closing and travel plans and big events cancelled. We all need to change our regular ways for the good of not just our own families, but our wider communities – and we need to look out for our most vulnerable.

It’s a time for kindness and compassion. I think it’s also important to step back and remind ourselves to remain positive. Because, as the Queen said last week in her reassuring statement, history has shown us that it’s at times such as this we can come together to work as one, “concentrating our combined efforts with a focus on the common goal”.

My heartfelt thanks go out to doctors, nurses and health workers, treasured teachers and our public services fighting this pandemic. But as Her Majesty has reminded us, we all have a role to play. I’m heartened by people who are simply reaching out to those around them to offer kindness and support.

That’s something we can all do.

It’s beautiful to see the compassion people are showing to each other. I can feel the kindness in spirit surrounding us. I’ve seen flyers, like the one on this page (left), being handed out in our neighbourhood, and I encourage you to cut this out and do the same. Please stay connected.

I know it all feels a bit bleak, but hope springs eternal and we will get through this together. I’m feeling good about going back to basics on the home front and we have advice (page 62) on how to stay happy and healthy.

As we face these challenges, I want to assure you that the team here at Woman’sDay will continue to bring you your favourite magazine. The world has changed rapidly, but you have a constant friend in Woman’sDay and we’ll still be here to inform and uplift you.

In these uncertain certain times, I love that hat we have this shared ed space in the pages ages of this magazine ne to come together. er.

Hunker down n and stay safe, my friends.
