TIP: Paint some simple hooks to further reinforce your colour scheme. You can also paint a bedside table and shelves – as we have done here – to tie the colours of your child’s room together.

DECOR ESSENTIALS

> A bedside table or unit is always handy for placing a drink, book and lamp next to the bed.

> One of the most under-utilised areas in kids’ rooms is the vertical space. A simple way to get clothes and bags o the floor is to install hooks, which not only tidies the room but makes things easier to find.

> Some form of shelving unit for storing toys, games and books is a must. Here we painted both the bedside table and bookshelf in Resene ‘Double Cod Grey’. Painting these items in a dark colour makes the items displayed on them stand out.

This dynamic space can be adapted to suit kids of all ages, from toddler to teen. We have used the duvet cover as the inspiration for the design and colour palette, creating a space that is practical, fun and oozes personality.

COLOUR PALETTE

> This playful room uses a simple three-colour palette of white, grey and black. Accent colours of Resene ‘Fizz’ (yellow) and Resene ‘Fountain Blue’ were chosen to tie in with the colours in the duvet.

> If plain walls are not your cup of tea and you are keen to be a little adventurous in your child’s room, try a simple but e ective paint design on the wall. Use the main photograph (right) as a guide and mark out the lines with painter’s masking tape. Painting a large triangle (which points towards the corner) and then repeating the colour on the side walls – as we have done with the white triangle – creates a cool design element.

> For an accent colour to have maximum impact, you ideally need to use it in the room at least three times and at three di erent heights. In this scheme, Resene ‘Fountain Blue’ appears high up on the feature wall, at mid-height on the wall hook and duvet cover, and then in the rug and storage box at floor level. We’ve followed a similar pattern with the bold yellow of Resene ‘Fizz’. If you stick to this formula for accent colours, you will be guaranteed a beautifully balanced room.
