Abia, Ohuhu Foundation poised to resuscitate Ulonna Farm Settlement
One of the Farm estates, Ulonna Farm Settlement, established by the late Premier of the old Eastern Nigeria, Michael Iheonukara Okpara is to be resuscitated by Abia State government in collaboration with Ohuhu Development Foundation, in Umuahia North Local Government Area where the Settlement is located for the betterment of Abians.
Governor Okezie Ikpeazu gave the assurance at the Government House, Umuahia during a meeting with prospective investors of the Farm settlement led by Onyema Ugochukwu, a representative of Ohuhu, the host community.
Ikpeazu directed Ikechi Mgbeoji, a professor, and Commissioner for Agriculture, to commence discussion with Ohuhu Development Foundation and relevant bodies With a view to producing workable plan for the take off of the project.
Ikpeazu noted that the revitalisation of the Ulonna Farm Settlement would create job opportunities for the teeming youths in the state as well as ensure food security and needed raw materials for local use and export.
According to the governor, the late Michael Okpara left behind indelible footprints in the Agricultural sector and promised not to let his efforts be in vain even as his administration had taken bold steps in the Agricultural sector especially in the area of rice and palm oil production.
He noted that there was need for setting up a platform to add value to Agriculture, adding that the dream to create an Agro value remained aglow.
Onyema Ugochukwu, a former chairman of NNDC and leader of the delegation, said they were concerned about the state of Ulonna Farm Settlement which had not been put into good use over the years.
He hinted that the Ohuhu Development Foundation was interested in promoting the rapid development in Ohuhu land, hence their resolve to seek the Governor’s approval to develop a programme for the revival of the farm settlement for the benefit of Abians.
Presenting the proposal to the governor, a member of the foundation, Enyinnaya Onokala said that they intended to develop Ulonna Farm settlement to modern Agricultural Business Producing competitive cash crops with value addition for the major domestic and export market.
