One Man’s Junk opens at DIDI Museum today

-

One Man’s Junk, an exhibition by Taiwo Owoyemi, opens at DIDI Museum today May 9, 2021. The solo exhibition is an assemblage of forms by Owoyemi, who is a multi-dimensional visual artist, and it also rides on success of his debut solo exhibition titled “Strokes n Dots”, which was held at Hexagon Entertainment Centre, Benin City, Edo State.

His “Repoussé Assemblage Sculptures” mirror the cultural and social life of humans, as well as, examines the choices people make in determining perceived waste and treasure; either to keep or discard objects and memories.

Speaking on the rationale for the exhibition, the artist explained that, “It is almost impossible for you not to see piles of trash scattered around the streets due to improper sanitary measures and societal behavioural patterns. This got me thinking years back about up-cycling. I investigated various options of Junks as an alternative material in making artistic statements and I discovered the beauty in discarded aluminum soda cans, due to their variance in colour and shades. So, I choose it as a medium to explore in my creative journey.”

Taiwo believes that one man’s junk is another man’s treasure and that nothing is ever truly useless. “My works are a reflection of my concerns towards human choices”, he said.

Meanwhile, before his latest exhibition, he has exhibited his works in various galleries across the country, while many of such works also hang in various spaces, homes and abroad.

The exhibition opens at Didi Museum today, May 9, 2021 from 2 pm -7 pm and runs on till May 16, 2021.
