Lawmaker, youths in Jos seek justice over ‘trigger-happy cop’

Youths of Anguwan Rogo community in Jos-North Local Government Area of Plateau State where one person was killed on Wednesday have called on the state government and the Nigeria Police to prosecute the alleged Police corporal who carried out the shooting.

The youths and the member representi­ng Jos North-North in the House of Assembly, Hon. Ibrahim Baba Hassan yesterday said they were ready to do everything possible to ensure that the alleged corporal was prosecuted.

A commotion in the area led to the shooting by the policeman.

Baba Hassan explained that: “From what we gathered, the said police officer has always made such threats and now an innocent youth has been killed. We will ensure that he is prosecuted.”

A community leader, Maikano Abubakar told Daily Trust that contrary to the report it got from a leader in the community, the youths who caused the commotion were not from Anguwan Rogo and that the victim had only gone there to settle a quarrel.

On his part, an activist in the community, Auwal Marshall stated that: “Some people were moving a corpse through the area but noticed that there was a stone road block which hindered two cars from passing. One of them tried to move the stone when the police officer came out to caution them. In the process, some of the youths shouted back and the police used tear gas on them.”

He said the youths returned the tear gas to the police who ran into the station and brought out his AK-47 rifle and first shot in the air then he started shooting at the crown and one Abubakar Iliyasu died instantly.
