Kicking off!

-

Come Monday, May 1, the third edition of Tombin, Dayak and Gladiators Systems Abuja Open tennis championship will serve off at the package B of the Abuja national stadium. It promises to be another eventful tournament as some of the up and coming stars in the game of tennis across the globe have registered to play for the whopping $75,000 prize money on offer.

The Nigeria Tennis Federation organiser of the ITF sanctioned tournament has expressed readiness to stage a hitch-free competition that will end on May 21.

Our cover story therefore previews the Abuja Open championship with emphasis on the gains made over the years and what should be expected at this year’s edition.

We share also with you the pre-tournament addresses presented by the technical director and the three sponsors of the championship.

In the interview corner, we have for you the interesting and inspiring interview our reporter in Lagos had with Nigeria’s most successful female table tennis player, Olufunke Oshonaike.

She spoke on her pet project and desire to attend the 2020 Olympics to make it her 7th appearance at the games she started attending since 1992 in Barcelona.

Our man in London, David Billington says embattled Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger is presently looking much younger. Read his incisive football column to know what is responsible for the sudden ‘transformation’ of Wenger.

2017 is proving to be a difficult one for former world number one tennis player, Novak Djokovic as he continues to struggle for the form that made him a ‘terror’ on court. His former coach Boris Becker says his problem is more of mental than physical.

And the final derby in this year’s English Premier League will be staged tomorrow as Tottenham Hotspur with their eyes on the title welcome Arsenal to the White Hart Lane.

Victory for Tottenham will brighten their chances of winning the title just as defeat will push Arsenal further away from their much desired top four finish.

At this juncture, I most respectfully step aside for you to enjoy this bumper edition of your ever blazing SHOT!.

Have a memorable weekend.
