Garba Lawal thumbs up Eagles on victory over Cameroon

- By David Ngobua

Former international Garba Lawal has lauded the Super Eagles on their convincing victory over the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon yesterday at the ‘Nest of Champions’ in Uyo.

Although not favoured to win the first leg of the double header against the reigning African champions, the Super Eagles silenced their critics with a 4-0 drubbing of the Lions.

The victory brought to 12 the number of times the Eagles have beaten the Lions of Cameroon in their 19 meetings.

Speaking to Daily Trust on Saturday after the match, Lawal said the Eagles have done their World Cup ambition a lot of good.

He reiterated that with yesterday’s victory the Eagles have made a statement of fact that they are once again ready for the big stage.

Lawal said the calm approach adapted by the Super Eagles was what made the game really difficult for their opponents.

According to him the Eagles took things easy and caught the Cameroonians on quick counter attacks which frustrated the African champions from the beginning to the end of the match.

“I congratulate the Eagles on their well deserved victory over Cameroon.

“Athough the Eagles scored four unreplied goals, nobody should think it was an easy match.

“The game plan deployed by the coach worked because the Eagles absorbed pressure and waited for opportunities to launch their attacks.

“With this victory life will be a lot easier for the Super Eagles. They have made the job of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup less difficult,” he said.

Lawal however said the Eagles should maintain the hunger that gave them the big win over their perennial rivals.

“The qualifiers are not over so the Eagles must keep their focus. The next match is equally important.

“I am urging the Super Eagles to win convincingly in Yaounde to seal their ticket to Russia,” he advised.
