Nigeria beats Libya 1-0

- David Ngobua

Asnap shot by Akwa United’s striker Sunday Faleye in the 79th minute gave the Super Eagles 1-0 victory over Libya in yesterday’s group C match at the ongoing Africa Nations Championship in Morocco.

The decisive goal came from a well taken corner kick by Enugu Rangers wing back, Osas Okoro whose perfect delivery fell to Faleye to score.

Having drawn their first group match 0-0 against Rwanda, the Super Eagles needed victory to keep their campaign on track.

Thus, it was another anxious moment for the team as the Eagles came up against Libya who had won their opening match by beating debutants Equatorial Guinea 3-0.

Eagles started with the same line up against Rwanda but few minutes into the second half, Anthony Okpotu had to give way for Enyimba FC striker Mustapha Ibrahim.

His introduction helped in putting more pressure on the Libyan defence as he combined better with goal scorer Faleye.

Ibrahim would have doubled the lead in the 82nd minute but after he outpaced his marker he opted to lay a through pass for Faleye who arrived late.

As the Eagles went in search of an additional goal, their opponents did not sit back as they also pushed forward in search of equaliser.

However, the back to back man of the match, Stephen Ezeh the Kano Pillars defender ensured their efforts yielded no positive result.

Super Eagles now have four points from two matches and will play their last group match against Equatorial Guinea on Tuesday, January 23.
