In year 2016, Plateau United struggled to stay in the Nigeria Profession­al Football League. However, after some drastic changes, the hitherto strugglers took the league by storm in 2017 and clinched their first ever NPFL title.

The 2018 NPFL season has commenced and the title holders have so far shown champions stuff. They won their matches back to back and are currently joint leaders with Niger Tornadoes.
