Only NSC can harness abundant sports talents – Kofar-Soro

- David Ngobua

A former Director of sports in Katsina State, Alhaji Aliyu KofarSoro has said the only way forward for Nigerian Sports is for the National Assembly to pass into law the National Sports Commission bill before it.

The National Sports Commission saddled with the responsibility of administering sports in the country was scrapped by the current minister of sports Solomon Dalung.

A bill is however before the national assembly and if passed into law would give legal backing to the commission which many feel is the most competent body to administer sports in the country.

Kofar-Soro reiterated that the scrapping of the commission by the minister has done so much harm to the sector.

He said if brought back, the NSC should be managed by only renowned sports technocrats who will bring their wealth of experience to bear on the sector.

According to him, sports talents abound in the country and the right body to identify and harness them right from the grassroots is the NSC to be presided over by competent sports administrators.

“I want to call on the House of Representatives to emulate Senate by passing the NSC bill so that it can be harmonised for passage into law.

“I was among those who vehemently opposed the decision of the minister to do away with the national Sports Commission.

“Nigerian Sports is suffering seriously in the hands of politicians who know next to nothing about sports administration,” he said.

Kofar-Soro therefore called on both the executive and the National Assembly to act fast on the NSC bill as he said politicians are mismanaging sports.

“I call on the National Assembly to act fast on the NSC bill. We need to bring back the commission, if we are to make any progress in sports,” he reiterated.
