Gumel visits Team Nigeria at Pyeonchang Olympics Games Village
International Olympic Committee (IOC) member and President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) Engr. Habu Ahmed Gumel has paida courtesy visit to Team Nigeria’s abode at the Olympic Village in PyeongChang, at the ongoing Winter Olympic Games.
Gumel, who is at the event as an IOC member addressed the 4-woman delegation and congratulated them on their historic achievement of being the first African team, men or women, to participate in the Bobsled and Skeleton events at the Games.
“I want to congratulate you on your historic achievement and for flying Nigeria’s flag high for the world to see.
“You have all etched your names in history and will always be remembered as the first Nigerians to participate in the Winter Olympics. We are very proud of you,” Gumel stated.
In addition, he said: “You have inspired a new generation of athletes who will now aspire to be like all of you.”
Gumel assured the team of the unequivocal support of the NOC throughout the games and beyond.
“I want to assure you that the NOC will do everything within its power to ensure that your stay in PyeongChang is very comfortable. I am here to support you and available to support you with anything you need.”
The NOC President reminded the athletes about the spirit of the Olympics – participation, but also encouraged them to go for Gold.
Nigeria’s first event will be on February 16, when Simidele Adeagbo takes to the ice tracks in the Skeleton event.
The Bobsled team will compete on February 20 and 21.
