University Press Plc, Rasmed Publishers, and Macmillan Publishers have donated books to children at Durumi Internally Displaced Peoples camp in Abuja this week.

Emmanuel Abimbola, Executive Secretary, Nigerian Publishers Associatio­n (NPA) said as the umbrella body of publishing organisati­ons in Nigeria, their major role is to promote and protect publishing in Nigeria. “What we are doing for the IDP camp is part of our corporate social responsibi­lity. We decided to provide books because we wanted to do something different from what others are doing. They need knowledge because it is power. When they read, they get enlightene­d and motivated. When the vehicles of members of the NPA pulled up in the premises of Durumi IDP Camp in Abuja, children ran out of their classes to learn who the visitors were. The publishers donated text books, Bibles and other reading materials to the IDPs.

Assistant Headmaster of the camp’s school, Aminu Abubakar expressed his gratitude to the associatio­n and said the books will help the children’s educationa­l developmen­t. “Without writing materials or books, they would not be able to learn, especially in this kind of environmen­t,” he pointed out.

Abubakar pointed out that he was from Katsina State and decided to relocate after his Youth Service Corp in Kaduna. The event took place at the Korean Cultural Centre, Central Business District, Abuja.

It was a gathering of poets, playwright­s and novelists and several other guests and friends of Ogezi who read from their works. These included Salamatu Sule, who read from her children’s storybook, ‘Oma the Drummer Queen’, Mrs. Chinyere Obi-Obasi, also from her children’s book, ‘The Loyal Queen’.

Dr. Seyi Adigun also read from his 2017 poetry collection, ‘A Child of Smell’, Theresa Ameh from her children’s book, ‘Aunty Talatu’, a poetry/musical performanc­e by Dr. Emman Shehu, and Professor Dul Johnson from his ‘Across the Gulf ’.

The poet, Ahmed Maiwada read from his latest collection, ‘We’re Fish’ and E.E. Sule from his forthcomin­g novel.

Two NLNG Prize winners Ikeogu Oke, winner of the 2017 prize (poetry) and Abubakar Adam Ibrahim (prose) read from their work-in-progress. Oke from what he called hiphop poetry in honour of late rapper Tupac Shakur, and Ibrahim an untitled Short Story.

What would have been another highlight of the occasion, the announceme­nt of shortlist of the 8th Korea Poetry Festival Contest 2018, didn’t take place.
