Daily Trust’s Managing Editor gets Print Journalist of the Year award
Daily Trust’s Managing Editor, Theophilus Abbah, has been awarded print journalist of the year, 2017 by the Capital Territory Law Review Magazine, a publication by lawyers, for his doggedness in the development of print media in the country.
The award was given yesterday in Abuja at a formal public presentation and award ceremony of the magazine by a former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Hajiya Salamatu Suleiman.
In his remarks, the President/ Editor-in-Chief of the magazine, Barrister Josiah Daniel Ebune, said the ideals of conventional media are to expose wrongdoings in high places and to hold the powerful to account. He urged Abbah to work harder and deepen journalism practice in the nation and beyond.
Ebune noted that the law review publication serves as a flagship and medium for objective and incisive legal research and analysis for shaping the law in all its ramifications, including setting lawful agenda for legislative, executive and judicial policy lawmakers.
In his acceptance speech, Abbah said the award will spur him to greater efforts and that he will continue to develop the capacity of journalists through training and retraining in investigative journalism. He said the need for sound journalists in a nation cannot be over-emphasised because journalism is the bedrock of every nation, government and the people.
Other awardees included Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Justice Danladi Umar of the Code of Code of Conduct Tribunal, Senate President Bukola Saraki and Professor Michael Adikwu, Vice Chancellor, University of Abuja. Others are Dr Tony Onoja, President Agricultural Policy Research Network, Professor Garba Aminu Sharubutu, Provost, Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology, and Nelson Ananze, Acting Executive Director, Community Action for Popular Participation.
