Lies you shouldn’t tell your doctor

- Judd-Leonard Okafor, with WebMD I’m not a heavy drinker I don’t smoke anymore I eat very healthy I exercise every day I slept with 1 person or no one I don’t have any problems in the other room Nothing wrong at all I’m drug free I take my medicine No to s

You might come clean and confess your sins to your priest. That gets you absolution. But if there’s any place to be honest about your habits, it is your doctor’s office. It might be embarrassing coming clean but don’t let that stop you. The more information they have, the better they can do their job.

You just don’t want to admit how bottles you down every week, but lots of alcohol regularly in you can mess up your test results, when you have a health problem. Your doctor might just be going down the wrong path trying to diagnose your problem.

Okay, so that saves you the lecture. But tobacco interferes with certain drugs and could explain some of the symptoms you are having, including chest and back pains. A doctor may even help you quit smoking for good, with therapy.

Many people don’t, and they know. They just don’t know how to stop wolfing down salt- and fatladen chips and fried foods. If you leave out the bad food part while your weight and bad cholesterol levels hit the roof, your little white lie could lead to less effective treatment. You are not the only with a weakness for deeply fried food, so just spill the beans. Your eating habits can be helped. Give it a break. You have kept those training shoes in your closet for three years without once using them. Tell the truth about your exercise. It will help your doctor figure out how to keep you health. It is fine if you are not cut out for hitting the gym every day. There are other ways to have an active lifestyle.

Your doctor isn’t there for your morality test. Lying about having sex or who you are having it with is common. It is no one’s business but it is a business that affects anyone you eventually are intimate with and whoever they are later intimate with, and so on and on. You get the picture. If you keep several partners, you could be at risk for certain sexually transmitted infections, which might explain certain medical problems. Some can be dangerous if untreated. The earlier your doctor catches them, the better your chances of treatment.

If you do—and many people do—it can be a sign of an illness, and your doctor should know about it. Especially if you are young and otherwise healthy. Whether it is low sex drive or erectile dysfunction. Your doctor may be able to improve your symptoms with medication or refer you for psychological therapy.

Maybe and maybe not. You don’t have to have the blues or be in pink heaves all the time, but don’t ignore little things that may be bothering you. They could be valuable clues to your doctor. Headaches when you exercise may not seem like a big deal but it could be a sign of something serious. So can your feet hurting when you get out of bed in the morning.

This can be especially dangerous. A drug your doctor prescribes may react with whatever drugs you may be taking on the side, make you really sick and cause other problem. Abusing drugs may also cause other problems that your doctor won’t think of looking for if they don’t know you do drugs. In addition, your doctor can help you with addiction or point you where you can get help.

Many who are sick on and off don’t take their medicines they way they are supposed to. They take for a few days, skip or stop when the symptoms wear off. If you skip your drugs because you are worried about side effects of how they make you feel, tell your doctor. The drug can be changed or the dosage adjusted. If money is the problem, your doctor might help you find ways to lower the cost.

Both are huge white lies. Many take supplements and even more people self-medicate. Some supplements may be dangerous if you take them along with other medication or have certain medical conditions. As for overthe-counter drugs, they can interfere with the way prescription medicines are supposed to work, sometimes in a dangerous way. And abusing them makes it more difficult for your treatment.
