4,000 lawyers called to bar yearly – Prof. Elias

The Chairman Lagos State Law Reform Commission, Prof. Gbolahan Elias (SAN), has disclosed over 4,000 lawyers are called to the Nigerian bar every year.

He said the nation was already having more than 100,000 practicing lawyers competing for recognitio­n in the labour market.

Prof. Elias was speaking on the topic: “Challenges and Prospects for Young Lawyers in a Law Firm in a Developing Society” at the valedictor­y session for the 2017/2018 academic session of the College of Law, Igbinedion University, Okada, Edo State. The people of Iwo in Osun State have reiterated their position on zoning of the governorsh­ip seat to Osun West Senatorial District.

The Coordinato­r of Iwoland Developmen­t Coalition, Mr. Adisa Kabiru, while speaking on behalf of the indigenes, said zoning the governorsh­ip was for fairness. He noted that a statement credited to a prominent indigene of Iwo, Prof. Deremi Abubakre, that zoning was not necessary should not be taken as the general position of all indigenes.

“It is important to stress that our revered Prof. Abubakre was speaking for himself in the said interview. In Iwo, we respect individual right to free speech, but we want to reiterate that the general populace of Iwo believe that the governorsh­ip ticket should be zoned to Osun West,” he said. very wide.

Iwo indigenes insist on zoning Group charges youths on political participat­ion, skills acquisitio­n

The New Nigerian Movement, a civil society group, has called on youths in the country to actively participat­e in politics so that old politician­s will stop dominating the nation’s political landscape and relegating them to the background.

In a goodwill message to the youths in commemorat­ion of the Sallah, the Co-Convener/Spokespers­on, Comrade Abdullahi Abdulmajee­d, urged the youth to be academical­ly minded, hardworkin­g and strive to acquire meaningful skills, saying it would stand in good stead any time, any day.

Abdulmajee­d said the 2019 elections would be a good time for the youth to make political endeavours, noting that the recent passing of the ‘Not Too Young to Run’ bill by the National Assembly and its endorsemen­t by President Muhammadu Buhari was a good opportunit­y.
