Over 40 golfers from around the world are presently sweating it out for a $25.000 prize money at the IBB International Golf and Country Club, in Abuja.

President of West Africa Golf Tour Emeka Okatta, the organiser of the tournament, told Daily Trust that the winner will go home with $4.000 at the end of the tournament.

The event which started on Thursday will come to climax on Sunday with the last golfer on the log getting $210.

“We have players from Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Spain, Germany, Zimbabwe, Cameroon, Gabon,” he said. “70 amateurs will play for trophies while the 40 pros will get prize money and trophies.”

He said the tournament is targeted at creating opportunities for the younger generations from the African continent to excel in sport.

While lamenting that sponsorship was drying up for golf, Okatta said government and corporate bodies now focus on football alone.

“Football is what government speaks now but we have decided to create a platform for people to excel”, he said. “We have gone to most companies but they are not responding positively.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwean Visitor Mapwanya has expressed optimism that he will successfully defend his title at the B & E tournament which is the fifth event of the 2018 West Africa Golf Tour season.
